Computer Usage Policy

With computers now being a part of everyday business and essential to the running of many companies it is important to have in place a comprehensive computer usage policy to manage access and use of PCs, laptops and computer networks.

Without a computer usage policy, there is very little to stop your staff potentially wasting time on the Internet, sending inappropriate emails, indulging in illegal activity or costing you money with extra support costs and lost time.

Without one, you can do very little legally. But with a comprehensive computer usage policy that you go through with and ask your employees to sign, you can. As an employer, manager or chairman, it is also fairer to educate people so that they know exactly what is and is not acceptable.

It is important to ensure that all existing and new staff members are taken through the computer usage policy and is fully understood. You should also ensure staff sign the computer usage policy to state that they understand the document and agree to comply with it's terms.

Alternatively you could incorporate the policy into your staff handbook or employment contracts.
